Dime novelist, James Carver, wanted by the law under the name Livingstone for something he didn't do, is picked up in Chicago by private investigator, Maxwell Simon, at the request of his siblings, Ethan Carver and Collette Raincrow. James has been avoiding going back to the little town of Pearl, his family and the secrets of his past, but Simon forces him to see that he can avoid it no longer. The characters in this short western historical are colorful and riveting. I'm not usually interested in same sex relations or any sort of cheating on a committed partner, but the complicated relationships and the subtle intricacies of character in this story blur lines and reinforce that context is everything. This is an excellent story and the last of four in the Pearls Series. Be sure to check out the first three, if you haven't already: All the Trees in Pearl, All the Women in Pearl and Interlude in Pearl. I will definitely be looking for more stories by this author.
