As the battle winds down Alex MacLean finds himself facing a redcoat, who he finds out too late is in fact a woman. Alex helps Elizabeth off the battlefield and to sort out her misdirected grief and pledges to escort her to her only living relative, an uncle who owns a bookshop in Edinburgh. Though this is a short story, I felt the connection between Alex and Elizabeth, even after so short an acquaintance, was mesmerizing. I look forward to reading the series.
